Union City’s baseball season ended with a 13-12 record after scoring sectional and regional wins — an impressive run led by Coach Jeff Wendel.
Wendel, originally from Ohio, joined the program after serving as an assistant in 2024 when the team earned a historic regional crown.
Central to his approach is mental performance — Wendel says that’s his “biggest strength.” He believes that when players learn to think clearly under pressure, everything else follows.
Adopting what he calls a “DAWG mentality,” Wendel defines the values as: Determined, Available, WIN (What’s Important Now), Great teammates.
Initially, some players resisted the shift — reluctant to trust teammates or commit to the collective mindset. But over time, their buy-in grew. The team learned to compete together, support each other, and believe in more than just individual performance.
For Wendel and his players, success on the field comes through preparation of both body and mind.
